Karlyn Wood received his Bachelor of Science degree from the State University of New York College at Oneonta, and his Master of Science degree in Elementary Education, Professional Diploma in Reading, and Doctor of Education degree from Hofstra University. He is a Professor in the School of Education at the State University of New York / College at Old Westbury where he teaches courses in child development and interdisciplinary instructional methodology and supervises seminar groups of student teachers. He has served several terms as chair of the Elementary Education Department and is currently Chair of the Childhood Education and Literacy Department in the School of Education. He received the State University Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Teaching in May, 1993.

 

Before his appointment at Old Westbury, he taught at the elementary level in the public schools of Merrick, New York on Long Island where he also served as a district reading consultant, administrator, and coordinator for an experimental elementary program. Dr. Wood has taught graduate courses in reading at both Hofstra University and Adelphi University.

 

His publications include, Interdisciplinary Instruction: A Practical Guide for Elementary and Middle School Teachers, a book originally published in 1997. The second and third editions were published in 2001 and 2005, and the book is currently under revision for the fourth edition which will be entitled Interdisciplinary Instruction for All Learners K-8. His articles have appeared in Language Arts (NCTE), Childhood Education (ACEI), The Journal of Child Development, and The Journal of Teacher Education, and he has papers that are included in Sociological Abstracts and ERIC. He is a member of the American Educational Research Association, the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development, the Association Montessori Internationale, and the Kappa Delta Pi honor society.
